According to the CDC, tobacco use and alcohol abuse contribute to more than one-third of the cancer deaths. Since 1999, changes in the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA's) Tobacco Product Labeling (TPL) Rule have required changes in tobacco packaging and retail presentation to make it more difficult for consumers to use the product, and thereby increase the number of tobacco quitters. Using California's Pinnock-Perla model of behavioral treatment, this study compares the effectiveness of two novel computer-delivered tobacco cessation treatment packages designed to address two of the three major barriers that consumers report that prevent them from quitting tobacco (i.e., they want to quit, but don't know how). The packages were tested in both a simulated store environment and in the subjects' homes to determine their effectiveness in promoting prolonged abstinence, as well as subjects' smoking-related cognitions. In a randomized trial, smokers were assigned to one of two packages. One package addressed challenges associated with quitting by providing information on how to effectively use nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), while the other focused on providing information on how to quit without using NRT. Participants were assessed at baseline and at 10 weeks for continuous abstinence, smoking-related cognitions (e.g., self-efficacy and outcome expectancies), and NRT use. The two packages were equally effective in promoting prolonged abstinence, reducing negative smoking-related cognitions, and promoting NRT use. The findings demonstrate that two tobacco cessation packages delivered by computer provide equivalent effectiveness and that consumers will readily use such packages, suggesting the future promise of such services in public health efforts.
